MAINE COON PROFILE

Maine Coon Breed holds the Guinness World Record for the longest domestic cat breed. Longer than they are heavy. Maine Coons grow for up to 3 years before maturity. They have a very distinctive wild-looking physical appearance.  They can weigh up to 30 lbs not because they are overweight, but because their body mass is spread evenly throughout their body. Their tails can measure up to 16 inches in length. Maine Coons have large tufted paws allowing the ability to walk on top of snow despite size and weight. Ears tufts on top of the ears added protection and warmth during harsh winters. Polydactyl Maine Coons have extra toes from a naturally occurring genetic variation, Polydactylism.

Lifespan: 12-20 years

Exercise: Low

Hypoallergenic: No

Length: Average 3.3 ft. (Nose to tail)

Grooming: Medium/High

Maine Coon Personality has a notable gentle disposition, loves to cuddle, loves everyone, has low energy needs, and can adapt to any home. Although initially bred for valuable hunting skills, today’s breed is a slow-paced hunter that is more likely to lick and cuddle your mouse than hunt it. Maine Coons are one of the oldest natural breeds in North America, specifically native to the state of Maine, where it is the official state cat. They are also called a Coon Cat; Maine Cat; Maine Shag; and American Longhair.

Maine Coons are NOT related to a bobcat, lynx or Racoon despite the wild look. Maine Coons are registerable with CFA, ACFA, FIFe, and TICA. Registries around the world have different standards calling for significantly overall type. Because r3egistries have different breed standards some bloodlines are referred to as European style or American style

Maine Coon Colors are vast coming in a large variety of 75 different color combinations! The top 4 most commonly registered colors of the breed are; blue Maine coons, red Maine coons, black Maine coons, and brown Maine coons. Every color can come with white patches of varying degrees or solid with no white. Smoke Maine Coons are often confused with black color Maine Coons. What is a smoke-colored Maine Coon cat? Smoke Color Maine Coons are a solid color cat that carries the inhibitor gene which suppresses the color in the hair shaft. This means that the cat's hairs are dark (usually black) at the tips but have much lighter colored bands near the bottom. All solid colors can be affected by the inhibitor gene which labels them “Smoke” plus the underlining solid color. Silver Color Maine Coons have more than 33% of the hair ends colored. Shaded Color Maine Coons have 33% or 1/3 of the hair ends are colored. Shell Maine Coons have 12% or 1/8 of the hair ends are colored. Maine Coon Size can be up to 30 pounds with an average weight of 17+ pounds. Their body mass is spread evenly throughout their long slender body. Slender cats can weigh 9-14 pounds but can still look the same as a more substantial set. Weight should not be guaranteed. Their massive tails can measure up to 16 inches in length. Some remark they are more tail than a cat. The longest Maine coon cat living measures 120 cm (3 ft 11.2 in) and was achieved by Barivel (Italy), as verified on 22 May 2018 by Guinness Book Of World Records.

Maine Coon History is somewhat foggy as the origins of the breed are up for debate to this day. The first mention of the Maine Coon is made in Francis Simpson's, "The Book of the Cat" in 1902. In fact, a whole section is dedicated to this very old breed, written by F.R. Pierce. The transition from adorned or glorified “Barn Cat” to pedigreed CFA finalist was neither an easy one nor did it happen quickly. The Maine Coon was all the rage in the early 20th century but lost popularity after the introduction of other long-haired breeds to the U.S.  The Maine Coon Cat was even thought extinct in the 1950s. Luckily, rumors of their death were greatly exaggerated and thanks to the dedication and perseverance of breeders, the Maine Coon Cat Breed was accepted for CFA championship status in 1976.
